If you’ve been watching the series, you’ll find Season 5 does a lot of special things with the original material and some new writing. There’s a lot of artistry that you’ll see in some of seasons 4, 5 and 6. Here’s a look at what’s really special about The Walking Dead Season 5, and why you should watch it.
The Terminus
One of the most terrifying foes in the series are the cannibals of the Terminus. They are human survivalists, led by the pragmatic Gareth. These cannibals are a frightening portrayal of what desperation and the fight for survival can lead people to do. The events in the Terminus was not there in the comic books, so it’s a welcome addition by the writers of the TV show. While Carol does do a lot of damage to the Terminus compound, which will probably give you a lot of vindictive pleasure to watch, Gareth and his group escape and hunt down Rick and his group, to enjoy them for dinner.
The Wolves
Season 5 also introduces the Wolves, who invade Alexandria. The Wolves are cold and uncaring, killing people for supplies. What makes them truly terrifying is the fact that they carve W on the foreheads of their victims and leave them to be turned into walkers. This is another deviation from the plot of the comics, or rather, a well-thought addition to the original plot.
Morgan’s Return
Morgan Jones was the first survivor that Rick met. HE was last seen in the season 3 episode ‘Clear’, trying to stay sane despite having lost his son to his undead wife, right before his eyes. Morgan returns in season 5, as he’s been following Rick’s trail. His rather moving backstory that explains his pacifist attitude brings an emotional point of anchor to the show.
Other Good Things About The Walking Dead, Season 5
What Season 5 does really well is weave in the different plot arcs, the main story line, the detours (many of which are unexpected) and the changing characters into a great storyline. Then there’s the acting by many of the cast members, which has received lots of praise from critics, besides bagging some awards.
There’s also a very racially balanced cast of characters that have been written into the show in this season. The growth of characters like Tyreese and Beth Greene have gone beyond the original template of the comic books and become truly complex.
All in all, there are many things to recommend Season 5, not least of which is its new tensions and changing environments that always keep our group of survivors – and us – on our toes.
